ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Medical Director of Palliative care services is a newly created leadership position that will lead and provide overall responsibility for strategic, academic, clinical and operational facets of palliative care services across our key Victorian and NSW sites- in collaboration with our Managers and multidisciplinary team and the senior leadership at Mercy Health.
Palliative care services at Mercy Health are delivered at a number of sites across the Western region of Melbourne as well as two regional sites in NSW.
Mercy Palliative Care is a community palliative care service operating in the Western region of Melbourne. Mercy Palliative Care provides a holistic multidisciplinary approach to palliative care. We provide psychological and spiritual support through caring for people of all ages with life limiting illnesses in their homes as well as complex symptom management. We currently care for over 500 patients across the region in their own home. There is a dedicated palliative care physician and registrar.
The Gabrielle Jennings Centre is a 12 bed inpatient palliative care unit located at Werribee Mercy Hospital. The unit provides multidisciplinary inpatient care to patients with life limiting illnesses in a purpose built unit. The service is supported medically by a palliative care physician, an accredited registrar and a resident. A non malignant symptom management clinic is well established. A Palliative Care Consultancy Service is provided to Werribee Mercy Hospital ensuring inpatients on general wards have access to high quality palliative care support. A new senior nursing position has been funded to support the growth in this consultancy service.
Palliative care services are supported medically in Mercy Health Albury by a palliative care physician and by GP vmos at Mercy Care Centre Young.
There is an opportunity to expand these services and further develop the model of care.
There is strong team culture and support from the nursing and allied health teams.
ABOUT YOU:
You will have the vision and skills to develop an integrated service to optimize and implement palliative care models of care. You will supervise physicians and junior medical staff in the service. As the inaugural Director, you will have a unique opportunity to make your mark and build on our vision of delivering exceptional patient experience, clinical care and service delivery. You will make an impact by:
- Providing strong leadership and clinical governance of the service
- Cultivating an environment that nurtures mentoring, learning and development of clinical staff through education and research
- Developing strong collaboration with other clinical teams, external partners and the health executive to provide a seamless patient centred model of care
- Being able to work independently and continually strive to improve patient care and experience
This is a permanent position, 0.6 FTE or more based on the inclusion of other portfolios.
