Position Summary

ABOUT THE ROLE 

This is an exciting opportunity to join the fastest growing Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. We are now recruiting for Registrars in Intensive Care Medicine for a fixed term until 30 June 2022. 

 The Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH) is a 300 bed general hospital providing comprehensive care in the south western urban growth corridor of Melbourne. It is a rapidly expanding hospital that provides emergency, intensive care, surgical, medical, sub-acute, mental health, palliative, maternity and newborn care, as well as renal dialysis services. A new paediatric ward is being commissioned from August 2019.

The ICU at WMH was opened in August 2018 and is an 8 bed level 2 metropolitan unit. It is equipped to provide hemodynamic support, complex hemodynamic monitoring, non-invasive and invasive ventilator support and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). The ICU also provides the adult rapid response system and oversees a monitored bay area (MBA) of 8 beds.  It is the fastest growing service at WMH. Annual admissions are approximately 690, the majority of which are emergency admissions, of whom approximately 20% are ventilated. We expect both acuity and ventilation numbers to increase as the hospital expands

 The ICU is accredited for Foundation Training with the College of Intensive Care Medicine. The Departments of Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine are accredited with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (for advanced training) and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (for basic training) and training time across all three specialities would be accredited to the relevant training programs.

Summary of the role:

  1. To develop skills and knowledge in Intensive Care Medicine. The ideal candidate would either already be a trainee with the College of Intensive Care Medicine or would aspire to become one. The position would be also suitable for trainees in related critical care specialities (Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, Acute Medicine, Surgery) looking for accredited training time in Intensive Care Medicine. We would also welcome experienced registrars seeking to gain experience and training in Intensive Care Medicine whilst undertaking learning and professional development activities.
  2. The trainee is responsible, under the supervision of the ICU consultant for immediate care of patients in the ICU offering compassionate, competent care and respect for life in all its stages working within Values of Mercy Health.
  3. The trainee would be expected to be part of the adult Rapid Response Service in WMH under supervision of the ICU consultant.
  4. The trainee is expected to contribute to the ongoing education, research and quality assurance programs in WMH ICU as directed by the ICU consultant.

 Key Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, be eligible or currently registered as a medical practitioner with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  2. At least three years post-graduate experience.
  3. Demonstrated strong interest in Intensive care.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with patients, relatives, medical and nursing colleagues, allied health, ward staff and administration staff.
  5. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership where required.
  6. A commitment to the importance and provision of teaching at all levels, including medical, nursing, scientific and allied health professional staff, both postgraduate and undergraduate.
  7. High professional standards and flexibility in work role. Prepared and able to participate in after-hours rosters.

 Key Responsibilities

  1. Leadership and management
    1. Readiness to take direction and willingness to learn from nominated supervisors, senior members of the team.
    2. Undertake junior level management responsibilities pertaining to day to day management of inpatients.
  1. Operational Responsibilities
    1. Management of day to day admissions, prescribing, discharge planning, hand overs and key administrative activities pertaining to direct patient care.
    2. Work in a multidisciplinary team setting and establish good interpersonal relationships.
    3. Participation in the ICU roster as required and in accordance with the current safe working hours guidelines.
    4. Participation in the ICU education program
    5. Provision of supervision and education to the junior medical staff and medical students
    6. Participation in clinical audits and research activities.
